Brought to you by Salim Omar and the CPA Marketing Genius Podcast with special guest Ryan Kimler.
Ryan Kimler is the founder of Net Profit CFO. Kimler is a financial expert who helps business owners achieve clarity and success by providing them with the tools and guidance they need to grow their business and increase profitability.
He works with accounting professionals, CPAs, enrolled agents, and business owners to help them understand what's working in their business and what's not. Kimler gives his clients the resources they need to take corrective actions and meet their goals and objectives.
Kimler's expertise and experience make him an invaluable resource for anyone looking to achieve financial success.
Kimler's background is in accounting and finance-he has a double major in the field.
Kimler started his career working for a CPA firm, where he discovered that small business owners needed more than just financial reports at the end of each month. They needed guidance and direction to help them move their businesses forward. This realization sparked a passion in Kimler to help these business owners. He spent the next two years learning from mentors and finding ways to provide the services they needed.
Kimler decided to launch his own firm, focusing on being a CFO. "I don't use the term 'CFO' with my clients because most business owners don't understand what a CFO does," says Kimler. Instead, he emphasizes the guidance aspect of his services, providing business owners with the tools they need to make financial decisions, overcome hurdles and challenges, in order to have a stronger and more profitable business.
Kimler markets his services by appearing as a guest on podcasts, launching his own podcast, and speaking at associations. He encourages that other CPAs do the same by finding an association that has business owners in their niche industry.
Kimler can be reached through his website

LinkedIn page.
Kimler is careful about the language he uses when communicating with business owners. He believes that many small business owners may be stuck doing things that they don't enjoy. To resolve this, he talks to his clients in their language in order to understand their passions, and make them feel comfortable before finding out how he can help.
Kimler emphasizes the need to understand business operations and the gap between where your clients are and where they want to be.
"Find out if the business owners are doing what they want to be doing and if their businesses are as profitable as they would like. Are they taking home enough money and having the vacations they want?" Says Kimler.
As a business coach, Kimler has worked with many business owners and helped them navigate the sales and discovery process. Through this work, Kimler has made some interesting observations about the challenges that business owners face and the power of a fresh perspective.
One of the biggest observations Kimler has made is that business owners often get so caught up in their day-to-day operations that they don't fully appreciate the problems they are encountering or how these problems are affecting them. As Kimler puts it, they are "in the trees" and can't see the forest.
However, when Kimler starts to ask questions and guides business owners through the discovery process, they begin to see things from a different perspective. By taking a step back and looking at their business from a 30,000-foot overview, Kimler is able to help business owners see the challenges they face in a new light.
"This shift in perspective is incredibly powerful, even if the business owner decides not to work with me," says Kimler, "the mere act of taking a step back and seeing things from a different angle can completely change the way business owners think about their business, leading to new insights and a fresh outlook."
Kimler also notes that it's not just about giving away the solution. It's about the timing and delivery of the solution. "When working with business owners, accountants must be aware of the right time and place to share their insights. Sharing their knowledge and solutions too soon or in the wrong context can render their advice ineffective," says Kimler.
Kimler describes his approach to helping clients achieve their business goals by setting targets, building actionable plans, and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) on a monthly basis. He works with clients to extract the most critical KPIs from their financials and then tracks them on a color-coded scoreboard. In case a KPI falls behind, Kimler and the business owner work together to develop an action plan to get it back on track. He explains the impact of the KPIs on the business's profit and cash flow. "The ultimate goal is to have all KPIs in the green, indicating that the business is on track to hit its targets," says Kimler.
Kimler notes that most of the time, businesses already have a CPA firm that they are working with and that these firms are responsible for the bookkeeping and tax preparation. He believes in the philosophy of "if it's not broken, don't try to fix it" and tries to leave the client operating the way they were before he got involved.
"However, if I see any areas that could be improved upon, I am happy to have a conversation with the client's accountant. This helps both me and the client, as it enables me to do my job better and also helps the client get a better understanding of their accounting processes," says Kimler.
Kimler mentions that if the business owner does not have complete metrics in place, he will help them find the right partner to bring those metrics. "If a business's marketing is high and having an effect on their profits, we will have a conversation about bringing in an outside marketing firm or partner to help improve the marketing and gather metrics," says Kimler.
Kimler meets with his clients at least once a month to review their financial dashboard and discuss their progress. During these meetings, Kimler provides his clients with two one-pagers: their scoreboard and action plan. In between these monthly meetings, he does a check-in with clients by email or video to ensure they are making progress on their action plan and to see if they need help with anything. The meetings typically last an hour, but may go longer if necessary. "I recognize that my clients' time is valuable and strive to be as productive as possible during their meetings,"says Kimler.
Kimler explains the difference between a business coach and a financial expert. He mentions that a lot of business coaches have expertise in sales or operations, but not necessarily in finances. As a result, when the conversation turns to finances, they might not be comfortable with the topic.
Kimler sees himself as someone who can provide the financial perspective for a business as well as help the owner understand their financials and make informed decisions based on the numbers.
"I love working with business coaches and clients who work with both a business coach and a financial expert because they tend to get their action plans done more effectively as the two coaches complement each other's expertise," says Kimler, "however, I also have clients who I work with as their only coach, providing both financial and business coaching services."
